â€Å"Feminist battled for decades to†¦ wrest power from men, Congratulations men, you won.† After comments like this how do you not ask yourself if there is still a need for a feminist movement throughout the country? Although it is now 2015, women still must put up a fight for equality. Males and females are constantly being compared in society. Especially at work, whether it is by earning less, or being subjected to an unfavorable environment, women are still seen as inferior to men, even if it is not directly portrayed. This is a problem that has been ongoing since time began, movements for women to gain equality have been occurring for nearly two centuries. However, the goals set by women like, Mary Wollstonecraft, Jane Adams, and Betty Friedan still have yet to be fully accomplished. Now more than ever there is a strong need for a feminist moment, and with stronger women than ever, it can be accomplished once and for all. Despite previous years of fighting, the term â€Å"feminism† did not come into play until the 1880’s. Coined in France, the term originally represented, â€Å"a movement determined to secure and defend equal rights and opportunities for women.† (â€Å"feminism† 1). One of the first generations of women’s rights advocates were heavily influenced by Mary Wollstonecraft’s work, A Vindication of the Rights of Women published in 1792. Through this analysis I hope to show that drug prohibition policies in the United States, for the most part, have failed. According to the Central Intelligence Agency, the estimated population of Peru in July of 2011 will be 29,248,943 people (The World Fact Book: Peru, 2011). The official language of Peru is Spanish. Peru is divided into three regions that consist of the coastal region, the mountainous region, and the jungle region. Peru has geography just as diverse as its population. Peruvians are known for their friendliness and hospitality and go out of their way to make foreigners feel welcome (Doing Business in Peru | Peruvian Social and Business Culture). In Latin America, Peru is the number one producer of gold, silver, zinc, and tin. In 2008, Peru’s GDP grew by 9. 7% in the first quarter and 11% in the second quarter when compared to the previous year’s corresponding quarters (UHY International Ltd, 2009). According to the U. S. Commercial Service website, the Peruvian economy continues to out-perform other regional economies and many economies around the world (U. S. Commercial Service, 2011). Peru Business Statistics Peru is considered to be a great country to conduct business. According to the Doing Business website, Peru is ranked fairly high in several key categories important to doing business there. In ranking 183 economies around the world, Peru ranks 36 in ease of doing business. In regards to starting a business, Peru ranks 54th out of 183. In regards to getting credit, Peru ranks 15th out of 183. Peru ranks 53rd out of 183 in regards to trading across borders (The World Bank, 2011). Appropriate Business Attire When conducting business meetings, business attire is extremely important. For men, it is standard to wear a well-tailored business suit. Any other type of casual business attire is not considered appropriate. For women, the appropriate business attire is considered to be a suit or dress. Tuxedos for men and evening gowns are required for invitations to official parties (Business Etiquette Peru: Merca Trade). Meetings and Greetings Peruvians look at the time in a very relaxed and flexible manner. This is called â€Å"la hora peruana†, which is translated to Peruvian time. This means that many times business meetings might be delayed. The visitor in no circumstance should be late, so always arrive on time. Appointments should be made two weeks in advance and confirmed one week in advance. The work week in Peru is typically six days a week, Monday through Saturday. Business hours are usually 8:00 am until 6:00 pm. Peruvians take longer lunches and many offices are closed from 1:00 pm until 3:00 pm. With that being said, business meetings during lunch are common and appropriate. Important to note is that many Peruvians take holidays during the months of January until March, so no meetings should be scheduled during these months. Unannounced business calls should never be made as Peruvians do not expect this nor are they appreciated. The Peruvian business organizations tend to be hierarchical and therefore when meetings are scheduled, they should be done so with top level managers. When greeting people, the introductions are informal and the person you are greeting should be addressed using Senor or Senora and their last name. (Doing Business in Peru | Peruvian Social and Business Culture). It is also expected that the person be greeted in regards to their profession. For example, if the person being greeted is an engineer, he would be greeted using Senor Ingeniero and the last name. First names are not to be used until the visitor is invited to do so. If business cards are to be given, the business card should be in Spanish and an English translation on the back of card. Language and Conversations Spanish is the official language of Peru. In the business setting, Spanish should be used as much of the business in Peru is conducted in Spanish. It is advised that to do business in Peru, the visitor should learn Spanish to be able to communicate. If this is not an option, an interpreter should be brought along to aid with the communication. There are topics during conversations that should be avoided and some that are recommended. When having conversations, topics to avoid are those about politics, the Peruvian government, and the ancestry of the person, especially if he/she is of Indian descent. Topics that are favorable are Peruvian culture, the history of Peru, cuisine and restaurants, and of course the national drink that is called a pisco sour (Ore. Luis, 2009). It is also important to note that you should not be surprised if the person you are speaking with is invading your personal space. It is the Peruvian culture to be in close physical proximity when communicating with one another. Religion Religion plays an important role in the lives of Peruvians. The Catholic religion is the most prevalent as more than ninety percent of Peruvians actively participate in the Catholic religion. Catholic traditions are at the base of many festivals and holidays. It is important to know how important religion is to the Peruvians and how this might affect business relationships. Dining Etiquette and Facts When dining, it is proper to keep your hands on the table or above at all times. It is considered bad manners to place hands in your lap (Rushton, 2011). As previously stated, lunch is the time that most business meetings take place. Lunch is also the largest meal of the day. Dinner is basically a social event and tends to be very late in the evening. It is not uncommon to have dinner as late as ten or eleven o’clock in the evening. When eating, it is customary to pass food with the right hand. For the most part, business is not discussed during dinner. If the visitor will be sending invitations to dinner, it is suggested that the time to meet be set at 9:00 pm. This is a common time for dinner invitations; however, dinner will most likely be served around 10:30 pm. In a formal function, the host will always be seated at the head of the table. If there is a hostess, she will be seated opposite the host. The most senior female guest will be seated to the immediate right of the host. Likewise, the most senior male guest will be seated to the immediate left of the hostess (Business Etiquette Peru: Merca Trade). It is common to be offered an alcoholic drink during a business lunch or dinner. If a toast is made, it is customary to propose one in return. This can be done by simply raising your glass and saying â€Å"Salud! . Also important to note is that the knife always stays in the right hand and the fork in the left hand. These utensils are never switched. In the Peruvian culture, it is also customary to eat everything served to you on your plate. Role of the Family Peruvians place a high emphasis on families. So much emphasis is put on families that they put families first before the needs of the business. This also relates to relationships. Peruvians will take time to get to know who they are dealing with before making any deals. Trust and familiarity are what business relationships are based on. To be successful in the business world of Peru, it is a good idea to develop friendships. The fact that Peruvians place such emphasis of families and relationships, it is not uncommon for them to inquire about your own family or personal life during the beginning of the relationship. Although some things might be considered private to you, it is simply that Peruvians combine their personal and professional lives together. Gift Giving There are many things to know about gift giving in Peru. There are many items that should never be given. If you receive an invitation to a home in Peru, it is recommended that you bring a gift with you. The host’s wife might appreciate chocolates from your country or if there are children, they might like some toys typical of what kids play with in our own country. Knives should never be given as a gift. This symbolizes the severing of a friendship. Also, it is not good to give any gift that comes in odd numbers. Odd numbers are considered bad luck. Suggestions of gifts that are good to give are wine, name brand or a quality set of pens, desk accessories, or something that is relevant to your home region. For example, some type or native folk art or book would be advisable (Business Etiquette Peru: Merca Trade). Gifts that should be avoided are thirteen of anything, purple or black objects as they may have some connotations of religious ceremonies, handkerchiefs which represent mourning, or any type of letter opener. Just like a knife, the letter opener represents the severing of a friendship. Hand Gestures Hand gestures should be thought about before using in any country. In Peru, this rule is no different. Hand gestures have different meanings in different countries and some could lead to trouble if the person making them does not understand what they mean. In the United States, to use the index finger to ask someone to come closer is common practice. In Peru this is considered rude. It is better to turn your palm downwards while moving all your fingers in a motion towards yourself. Again in the United States, when a person gives an ok sign by making a circle with the pointer finger and thumb and the other fingers up in the air, this has no bad meaning at all. However, in Peru, when a person makes this sign, they are saying that they are gay or that the person they are talking to is gay. To give the ok sign in Peru, a person would make the same circle with the pointer finger and thumb, but, the other fingers would be pointing down. In conclusion, Peru is a great place to start a business. Having identified many cultural facts will be a great asset in starting and running a successful business. People everywhere are not waiting until they get married to have sex. People having sex today are not aware of the consequences that come with having sex. It is perceived to be a great thing from the time one is young. Going to elementary school kids always talked about the day they were going to have sex. They looked forward to it. The magazines that one sees when digging through the drawers of an older brother, uncle or ones father. Sex is all over society. You can not watch cable television without seeing people kissing intimately, or even having sex. Just because cable does not show full nudity does not make it any better to let an eight year old child watch a television show full of sex. In today's society women are not held to that same standard as men are when it comes to having sex. Now that the reasons people are having sex has been somewhat discussed and is out of the way, let us discuss the consequences that come with having sex, such as A.I.D.S. This is a deadly virus that kills ones immune system. A person never dies from the actual virus. They die from the diseases that they would not have otherwise contracted if they still had a strong immune system. The immune system doesn't die slowly either it take at least five years for the immune system to eventually give out. A person can die from a simple cold if they have contracted the A.I.D.S virus. They cold starts of as a normal one does but it just keeps getting worse and worse. People suffer before they die from this disease. This disease has been responsible for killing millions of people. The way this virus is contracted is through exchange of bodily fluids. Sex is the number one way this virus is spread. What people are not realizing is this disease is deadly and by having premarital sex and not being monogamous they too can contract this disease. People are very aware that this disease is out there but they do not understand that it can affect them. There are lots of other diseases out there other than A.I.D.S that are caused by having sex. Most other sexually transmitted diseases are deadly but they are curable if found before they cause your body damage. Let's not forget how painful these diseases are. All I can say when I think of contracting something as painful as a disease as painful as these have been described is ouch! Why would someone even want to take the chance of contracting one of these horrible diseases? There is a very simple solution if one would want to avoid contracting one of these horrible diseases. It's just as easy as not having sex. Let's not forget how bad a reputation could be damaged if people found out that a person had a sexually transmitted disease. They would be laughed at and ridiculed. People would think that a person was dirty if they knew they had diseases. What kind of feeling would a person have knowing that they have a disease that they have contracted through sexual intercourse. Maybe a better question is, what kind of feeling could a person walk into a church with knowing that people know they have a disease that they have contracted while having sex before they were married? The major religious belief in the United States is Christianity. Christianity teaches that having sex before getting married is wrong. Having sex is a sin and when people sin they go to hell. Lots of people have sex with other people just to do it. They don't think of that others feelings. Christianity teaches people to treat others as they would like to be treated. I'm sure no person likes getting his or her feelings hurt. People should think about others before they do such things such as use others for sex. Christianity also teaches that lust is a sin. Linguistics is a science and teaching while technical is also an art yet they are closely related to each other in the case of language teaching. The foreign language teachers need to include ‘selection’, ‘grading’ and ‘presentation’ as their main steps. Linguistics plays an important role in the whole process of teaching by helping to facilitate a teacher’s understanding of the workings and systems of the language they teach. Applied Linguistics is really about the melding of these 2 actions. The Relationship between Linguistics and Language Teaching. Linguistics is defined as the scientific study of language. Linguistics is then divided into several branches which study different accepts of its use. Descriptive linguistics, historical and comparative linguistics, which it is based on methodology. Synchronic and Diachronic linguistics, which it is based on the aspect of changes over time. Phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics, which is based on a language as a system. Sociolinguistics this is related to or combined with the disciplines of linguistics and sociology. Its interest is in the relationship between language and society. It works to explains why people Use different speech in different social contexts. It’s area of study is the social functions of language to convey social meaning. The conclusion that was formed went in two two main directions of thought with differing points of view. One viewpoint was that linguistics is not as relevant as it was first thought to be, and its importance was overrated. Such linguists as Lamendella (1969) and Johnson (1967) expressed their disagreement to regard linguistics as the basis of a strategy of learning. Lamendella (1969) thought that it was a mistake to look to transformational grammar or any other theory of linguistic description to provide the theoretical basis for second language pedagogy. What is needed in the field of language teaching are not applied linguists but rather applied psychologists. The other point of view was to recognize that the general contribution of linguistics was important. This came though with a proviso that teaching language was not to be bound to only follow one theory alone. The idea being that different linguistic theories can offer different perspectives on language, and they can all be treated as equivalent resources useful for teaching. Levenson (1979 ) once said, ‘no one school of linguistic analysis has a monopoly of truth in the description of the phenomena of speech†¦traditional school grammar, TG grammar, †¦all these and more can be  shown to have their own particular relevance to the language teaching situation. By1960 the United States, reached its peak of the influence of structural linguistics upon language Teaching. Structural linguistics stressed the importance of language as a system and investigates the place that linguistic units such as sounds, words and sentences have within this system. This then associated with behaviorism provided the principal theoretical basis of the audio lingual theory. This then influenced language teaching materials, techniques and the teachers educations. Behaviorism led to theories, which explained how an external event, causes a change in the behavior, without any kind of mental interaction. It also stressed the importance of repetition and practice in learning a second language, this I think is a vital factor in learning a foreign language. If we look at the audio-lingual method, it emphasizes: (1) The teaching of speaking and listening before reading and writing; (2) The use of dialogues and drills; (3) The avoidance of the use of the mother tongue in the classroom. Audio-lingual method regards speaking and listening as the basic skills, this is in line with today’s English teaching situation. The Mentalist Approach In the 1960s Chomsky formulated the mentalist approach. The hypothesis was considered that human behavior is much more complex than animal behavior. Chomsky, felt that we are born with a Language Acquisition Device (LAD), which enables a child to make a hypotheses about the structures of a language in general, and also the structure of the language being learned more importantly. By the end of the sixties’, there were new developments in teaching language starting to occur. The TG theory had a big impact resulting in a change in teaching methods. It was opposed to the empiricist theory, that is, teaching audio linguistics, linguistically structuralism and psychologically behaviorism. TG theory. 1 It stresses mental activity. 2 It postulates that all human beings have an innate ability to learn a language. 3 That it is an inborn instinctual ability and not practice that made human beings obtain the rules of a language and understand and can produce countless numbers of sentences. The Natural Method was successfully used in various language schools in the USA and Europe in the late 19th and the early 20th century. In the post-World War I decades, the direct method was adopted into English language teaching (ELT) this laid a solid intellectual and practical foundation for developing ELT as an autonomous profession. Some linguists, like Diller (1970), openly declared his preference for the cognitive position; while others, like Chastain (1976) and Rivers (1981:25-27) held that the two theories were complementary and served different types of learners or teachers or represented different phases of the language learning process. Applied Linguists brought about the situational approach and the notional/functional method. It is based on a broader framework for the description of language use called communicative competence proposed by Hymes, This brought about the communicative approach to language teaching came into being. In 1970s, a group of scholars including Oller (1970) and Widdowson (1978), were linguists but at also closely in touch with teaching practice. They gave language teaching and language pedagogy the linguistic direction they regarded as necessary. Since they were in touch with language teaching practice and linguistic so had a two-way view of the problem, they placed emphasis on real language and its communication and use. To take Oller’s interest in pragmatics as an example. Oller (1970:507) claimed that pragmatics has implications for language teaching; it defines the goal of teaching a language as prompting the students not merely to manipulate meaningless sound sequences, but to send and receive messages in the language. The students in China start English when they are in primary school. In the past, more attention was paid to the grammar, the result was very disappointing: Now the emphases is on speaking and listening. The audio-lingual method is now used in the classroom. In China, more people need to learn English in order to have the ability to communicate with foreigners. In this case, speaking and listening is much more important than being able to read and write. They are not expected to have a high level of English and their aim is simple, they need to communicate with a foreigner so they can understand their words and express themselves well. They may not read or write but I feel if they had the opportunity to learn now they have grasped the basic language that they would with more ease. There is a need for them to talk and sell to foreigners so they have had a need and incentive to learn and the fact that their using it every day also helps. Though there are of course talented students I find in Thailand the communication level is not good as a lot of emphases is but on reading, writing and grammar, that many times, is not really understood or comprehended. Thai students learn form primary but they do not always have a reason to speak out of the classroom. One lesson a week in speaking and 3 of grammar I find makes the students scared to use the language. I teach with Thailand teachers and due to a some general pronunciation problems the students are confused about the sounds of the words and how to string them  together. Confidence helps a lot just talking even if it is wrong. I always attempt to inspire confidence as I feel it is very important for speech. In my opinion, linguistics and language teaching relationship is a dual one. There are some theories of linguistics that can be applied to language teaching, i.e. linguistics guides in development of language teaching theory. On the other hand, a language teaching theory expresses or implies answers to questions about the nature of language. It is necessary for a language teacher has some knowledge about, the systems of languages. A teacher should understand how the language works and expresses meaning and the structures that are used in the language being taught. A teacher needs to know how to make the phonic sounds and the mechanics to produce these sounds. This helps with pronunciation problems that students will encounter. By studying linguistics a teacher will have a deeper insight into the nature of language and the language the student speaks as they’re first language. If we agree that the use of a language is a matter of habits and practice, then a teacher needs to implant the habit of using it for communication until it becomes second nature. Conclusion Linguistic theory is continually developing and teaching theories are constantly changing as is the language itself. This alone demands a permanent study of languages and the relationships between linguistic theory and language teaching methods. There are many techniques and theories but no one concept or technique can take in the Different needs student may have and the differing ways people learn. This is a science in its self. There can be many differences in understanding between the L1 and L2 language from different cultural understandings and different sounds that may be new to the learner. And the band played on is a true story published in 1987 that illustrates the AIDS epidemic. The AIDS outbreak started in this book around the 1970’s and is still around in today’s society. Randy Shilts wrote this book in order to show the many errors that occurred and killed while trying to find what this virus was and how it was spread. Many people during this time were affected by this virus especially in New York and San-Francisco, which is where most of this story takes place. AIDS which is also known as acquired immune deficiency syndrome is being spread fast after the first known account discovered by the CDC, and is extremely difficult to identify. Shilts discusses the many issues that could have saved thousands of lives throughout his investigative journalism. Some of the issues that effected many lives of the people living in the highly populated areas like New York and San-Francisco were the ethics of this complicated situation, the political issues that tagg ed along with this multitude, and the medical issues in determining the problem and solution of the epidemic. And the band played on had many cultural issues taking place all over heavily populated areas like San-Francisco. One of which is the fact that after this virus became better known by the public, but not by everyone. At first, it was only being published in articles mostly only read by the gay community. During the 1980’s being gay was much different than in today’s society. It was especially harder for gay men and women during this time because people who were homosexual were treated as outcasts and alienated. San-Francisco and New York City became heavily populated with homosexuals. The higher populations of gays in these areas made it easier for them to cope because they dealt with less criticism. This made the AIDS epidemic more prevalent in these areas due to the fact that it was being spread mainly through gays. When AIDS started killing more and more people, the general public became aware of the outbreak. Because of the lack of knowledge of the nature of this virus it was not given a specific name. at first AIDS was being called gay cancer due to the fact that people were unaware of how it was actually spread. This made the prejudice against gays  much more prevalent just about everywhere. This was making it very difficult on the political side of the AIDS issue. The politics surrounding the AIDS epidemic in And the Band Played On was a complicated issue. The issue being that it was surrounded by the gay population making it a touchy subject for most. Even newly elected president Ronald Reagan would not talk about the issue publically for the fact that it might hurt his status as the president of the United States of America. Ronald Reagan’s policies were to cut government spending, which included the spending of the much needed CDC at the time. The CDC lost a lot of money that could have helped immensely in the research to counteract the spread of aids. Many doctors and scientists refused to work on such an issue. For example, the blood bank officials were not at all convinced by the CDC’s findings of the blood being tainted from AIDS patients. Many AIDS patients were donating blood, and even though the blood is filtered and tested for diseases there were cases popping up of babies contracting the AIDS virus. The blood bank off icials knew that people who received their blood were getting AIDS, but did not put a stop to blood draws from infected patients. The officials were more concerned about themselves and their business then the lives of people that were receiving their blood. The blood banks were not the only businesses that were disregarding the lives of others. Shilts also discusses how the bath house business in the heavily populated areas was another key player in the political battle that cost many people their lives. The CDC discovered that gay bath houses were where many gays were contracting the disease. Many people would come and go in these bath houses just for sexual interaction. Sex in these bath houses was spreading the AIDS virus like wildfire. The CDC had no absolute proof yet that the virus was being spread sexually at the time. The bath house owners made a lot of revenue in areas like San-Francisco which made it highly unlikely for them to listen to the CDC about the public health issues that surrounded their business. Many bath house owners cared for only themselves and the money they were making, just like bloo d banks. The CDC needed definitive proof showing that this is where the majority of the virus was being spread before the executive director of public health would shut them down. Even the public health director was worried about jeopardizing his status if he shut  these bath houses without definitive proof that it was being spread there which could take years to prove. Taking more time to prove this would cost many more people their lives. In the book Shilts says, â€Å"some said Ronald Reagan would be remembered in history books for one thing beyond all else: He was the man who had let AIDS rage through America, the leader of the government that when challenged to action had placed politics above the health of the American people.† It is easy to put the blame on one person for a nationwide epidemic, but in the end it was not just president Ronald Reagan that let the AIDS virus run ramped throughout the nation. Although Regan’s promise of a grant to the CDC never was received , this problem was not just fueled by the president, businesses small and big, and gay activists that did not want their bath houses shut down even though they knew the dangers behind them only aided the outbreak. Not only were these issues caused from them but even scientists and doctors. The medical issues in determining the problem and solution of the epidemic were doctors and Scientists that were competing to find the cause of this virus, and mainly competing to identify the virus. If they can identify the virus they will be able to test for it. The CDC discovered that they could test for it but with only a marginal accuracy. This idea of testing for AIDS only to certain accuracy made it difficult to mandate the testing, especially in the blood banks. American Doctor, Dr. Gallo was contacted by the CDC and told of this new virus that was killing many gays and decided that he would help research this virus. Meanwhile the French are also studying the strange new virus. As these scientists and team of doctors are trying to solve the mystery of the AIDS virus they realize the importance of it after the amount of death it has caused has reach new heights when death numbers increase quickly pass ed the thousands. Both parties of scientists realize that if they discover the aids virus they may be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize. Just like the blood banks and the owners of the bath houses, Dr. Gallo and the French no longer cared about the lives of the people, but only for themselves and their own personal gain. In the end this almost delayed the discovery of AIDS due to the fact that both research centers had discovered it, but Dr. Gallo claimed that he had discovered it first. This almost caused the French to sue Dr. Gallo which would have made the ordeal even longer causing more deaths that could have been avoided. Another medical issue that could have saved lives  was the grant that president Regan promised the CDC for research that they never received. If they would have got this grant money the issue with Dr. Gallo and the French could have been avoided. The CDC could have used this grant money to buy the proper technology to study this virus and find it themselves, which in turn could ha ve saved lives. In And the Band Played On there are many things that Randy Shilts Expresses that could have saved many lives. He wrote this book to bring light to the fact that the AIDS epidemic was ignored and not taken seriously. There are many issues Shilts brings up in his book that could have helped avoid the many complications that were faced during the AIDS breakout. Shilts sheds light on how this epidemic was poorly resolved. Although he does not explain the ways these errors should have been handled, he lets the reader decide on how these mistakes could have been treated. The thousands of lives taken from the aids epidemic could have been avoided, or at least less then what it was. For example, Regan could have been more proactive in the fight against AIDS rather than ignoring it completely due the fact that it was a touchy subject. He was more worried about his status as a president if he addressed this issue. Shilts brings up the politics surrounding the AIDS epidemic when he talks about the blood banks. The politics surrounding the blood banks allowed many people to contract the AIDS virus knowingly. If the blood bank officials would have cared less about themselves and more about the public health, hundreds of deaths could have been avoided. Another large amount of deaths was caused from the politics around the issue of the spreading of the AIDS virus in bath houses. The bath house owners neglected the public’s health for their own benefit. The bath house owners cared for no one else but themselves and the money they were making. The medical problems they had with finding the AIDS virus also cost many lives. Dr. Gallo and the French battled against each other in order to find the virus when they should have been working together. Also, the grant money the CDC was promised never arrived which could have cost many lives because they might have been able to find it sooner than Dr. Gallo or the French. Ethics, politics, and medical issues caused thousands of deaths that could have been avoided. History usually repeats itself, and Shilts wrote this book in order to prevent another massive tragedy like the AIDS epidemic from happening again.
